Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve – Singapore’s first ASEAN Heritage Park
In recent times, Singapore has gained global recognition for its efforts in preserving its natural habitats and these efforts include maintaining its natural reserves such as the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, the Central Catchment Natural Reserve, Labrador Nature Reserve.
Among Singapore’s many ecological wonders, is the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. Situated in the northwestern part of the state, it was declared the first wetlands reserve in Singapore. Proudly known as Singapore’s first ASEAN heritage park, Sungei Buloh is the largest mangrove forest in the country!
Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is every nature lovers’ dream come true. Home to a large diversity of ecology – crabs, mudskippers, otters, crocodiles and monitor lizards can be spotted in their natural habitats. If you would like to get really close to the mudflats and mudskippers, it is best to visit during the low tide. The 87 hectares wetlands is extremely popular among bird watchers, as they can watch the residential birds fluttering beautifully across the skies. During the migratory seasons of September to March, you can catch some migratory birds flocking across the clear, blue skies to escape the cold, and flying to countries with warmer climates.
If you would like to fully experience the wetlands and learn about it, you can join the free guided tours, which are available every Saturday from 9.30am-11.am, except public holidays and eve of public holiday. Registration is limited to the first 20 people, you can read more about it here.
