Red Square Melaka – Dutch Square in Melaka
Red Square Melaka is also known as the Dutch Square. It is a historical attraction depicting the city’s history and splendour. The Red Square is a perfect reflection of Melaka’s historically rich heritage. Located in the centre of the old city of Melaka, Red Square gets its name from the reddish-coloured structures and buildings surrounding it. The striking colour of the buildings around it, makes it an ideal landmark to take nice photos. Red Square is also commonly known as Dutch Square because it showcases many Dutch buildings, which were used by the Dutch government for their administrative work during the Dutch colonial.
Other historical landmarks in Red Square:
The largest building in Red Square is the Stadthuys, which in Dutch translates into ‘townhall’. Built between the years 1641 and 1660, it used to house the Dutch governor. There are a few museums here which you can look around. The galleries showcase weapons, maps, photos and information regarding the history and how Melaka gained independence.
Right beside the Stadthuys, is the beautiful Christ Church. Built in 1753, it is the oldest protestant church in Malaysia. The most distinct features of the church are centuries-old handmade pews and a 15 metre long ceiling beams of the church which were all made from the same tree. It holds a compilation of beautiful silverware and the detailed canvas of the Last Supper.
The Queen Victoria’s Fountain is also another significant landmark in the Red Square. It was built by the locals as a tribute to the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1904. This century-old fountain provides a historic as well as a romantic setting for you to capture beautiful pictures
Another noteworthy attraction is the Red Clock Tower or Tan Beng Swee Tower. It is named after the renowned Chinese magnate in honour of which it was built in 1886.
