The Pinang Peranakan Mansion is situated in the city of George Town, Penang, and it represents the rich heritage of the Peranakans in Penang. The Peranakans, are also known as either the Baba(men) or the Nyonya(women), and were a prominent part of the Penang’s population. Their unique way of life came from the influence and adoption of a mixture of the local Malays and colonial British culture.
The Pinang Peranakan Mansion is a re-creation of a typical rich Peranakan family. It tells a story about the Peranakan culture, lifestyle and traditions. The antique furniture, jewelleries, costumes and accessories, which are displayed around the house, was what a typical Peranakan used.
The majestic mansion stands tall celebrating its glory today, where panels have been carved by Chinese wood, Scottish ironworks and English exquisite floor tiles.
Pinang Peranakan Mansion welcomes you with a centre sky well that is huge and impressive, which is a common concept to Prewar houses but none features it as lavishly as this one. Furthermore, the mansion comprises of game rooms, dining rooms and meeting rooms. The dining room is truly majestic as well as intricately designed.
This Peranakan heritage museum also displays its 1st floor in the most exquisite manner, where you can admire the bridal room, treasure hall and grand living room with bright and natural lights reaching into the room.
Moreover, one cannot move their eyes away from the beautiful vintage wedding gowns and the gorgeous Nyonya dresses. The hand crafted delicate shoes embroidered and with pretty beads shows off a Peranakan’s intricate work.
