Kampung Morten Melaka
Kampung Morten is a historical traditional Malay village located in Melaka. If you would like to experience what it is like, living in a village, that is right smack in the city center, then look no further. Many of these houses in Kampung Morten are converted into homestay, so you can actually take up residence in one of these traditionally designed Malay homes if you are curious to find out what it feels like!
Even if you don’t plan to stay here, you can visit the village and learn about the cultural heritage. There are no entrance fees for it. What is so cool about the village is that there isn’t any proper fencing between the houses, so you can actually walk up real close to the villages to see the people and their way of living.
Kampung Morten is quite an incredible sight to see. The Melaka River draws the border between the village and the modern city, so you can see a huge contrast between the rural villages and urban cities!
When you take an afternoon walk through the streets of Kampung Morten, you might be able to capture a beautiful moment of village dwellers having tea and chatting with their neighbours, while the kids play in the background.
The village is open everyday from 9am – 5pm, but it is closed for a break from 1pm – 2pm. Please take note that the opening hours are from 2.45pm – 5pm on Fridays.
You may be wondering how did Kampung Morten get its name?
The village was developed from a mangrove marshy land and founded by Othman Mohd Noh. The village got its name from JF Morten, a British-era land revenue collector, who helped, during its establishment in the 1920s. Kampung Morten used to be a quiet settlement until 1989, when the government proclaimed it as a ‘heritage village’. Since then this historic village has been a major tourist attraction.
You have to come and visit Kampung Morten if you are in Melaka! It is quite a mesmerising site to see!
