Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple is one of the oldest Chinese temples in Johor. This temple has been around for more than 140 years, and it has a long history that goes way back. This temple has always been an extremely important landmark in Johor and many tourists will visit the temple to worship or pray to the deities when they are in Johor.
There is a huge significance behind this temple. Johor Bahru Old Chinese Temple was actually built in the nineteenth century by the then head of Ngee Heng Company – Tan Hik Nee, along with other leaders. He hoped that this temple would maintain the peace and create more tolerance and understanding among the 5 different Chinese clans – Hokkien, Hainan, Hakka, Cantonese and Teochew. This temple was built by him after he successfully managed to stop the rivalry and fighting between the clans, who were driven by powers and control. Hence, the Old Chinese Temple was built in hope to remind each other of the importance of unity in the Chinese community.
During Chingay, also known as the Parade of Deities, you can definitely expect a larger crowd! This five days long procession is a must to have every Chinese New Year. Statues of the temple deities, representing the 5 clans are carried by the devotees around the Johor Bahru city during the ceremony, to bring blessings to the city.
