The origin of Concubine Lane:
With a long history that goes all the way back to the year 1892, where a nasty fire destroyed the Old Town, the town was later rebuilt and restored by a rich mining tycoon, named Yao Tet Shin. He rebuilt the town with lanes of shops and gave 3 lanes as a gift to each of his wives, and this was how it got its name as the Concubine Lane. The names of the lanes given by the locals are the Wife Lane, the Concubine Lane and the Second Concubine Lane. But there is also a folklore that it was initially a residential location where the rich and affluent Chinese kept their concubines.
The Concubine Lane is the busiest and the most developed of the three lanes. Most of the buildings are new, and it houses a hotel, shops and restaurants. The best time to visit here is probably during the weekends as they have art festivals and performance to liven up the atmosphere. There will also be popup stores where you can reminisce your favourite childhood memories, like eating ice balls, cotton candy, popsicles and many more!
You should also visit the other lanes when you are here as they also have interesting murals which you can take pictures with! There are also souvenir shops and local delicacies which you can try here!
Concubine Lane Ipoh is a heritage trail that is filled with history, heritage and cultural insights, and you should definitely visit here when you are in Ipoh!
