Cheng Hoon Teng Temple – The Oldest Chinese Temple in Malaysia
Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is the oldest Chinese Temple in Malaysia. It is also called ‘Merciful Cloud Temple’. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple was built in Melaka’s Temple Street, in the year 1646. It is a beautiful and very well preserved Chinese Temple in Melaka with stunning architecture and beautiful wooden carvings. The temple is looked after by a board of trustees. This oldest Malay Buddhist holy place is dedicated to the Goddess of mercy, Guanyin. There is a statue of Guanyin, draped in red, gold and black, mounted in the main prayer hall. You can also worship to the other Gods. There are more rooms inside the temple dedicated to them. The temple practices the Three Doctrinal Systems of Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism.
Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is built with imported materials from China and is known for its architectural finest and woodwork carvings. The curved roof, design of the gable and other regular architectural features are inspired by Chinese craftsmanship. Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is built on the feng shui principles. Unlike typical Chinese temples, the doors of the temple have the Eight Immortals of Taoism instead of images of Gods. Gold calligraphy by Dutch diplomat named Robert van Gulik can also be seen here.
Devotees can be seen lighting incense sticks and offering prayers everyday. The temple is marvellously adorned both inside and outside with beautiful artefacts, attractive wall paintings, sculptures of phoenixes and dragons etc.

It was founded by two leaders from the Hokkien Chinese community centuries ago and has since then remained in an excellent condition. It was awarded by the UNESCO in 2003 for its outstanding state of conservation. During the initial years of its building, apart from serving as a place for worship, Cheng Hoon Teng temple was an official center and justice court.
