Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum – A look into The Peranakan Culture
The noble descendants of Chinese, Baba and Nyonya are also known as ‘Straits Chinese’. They have adopted and made the Malay culture into their own unique culture-Peranakan culture. A gradual process that has continued for over 400 years even until today. The famous explorer of China, Admiral Cheng Ho initiated the settling of Chinese in Malaysia. The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum comprises of 3 beautiful houses maintained in its original form. The furnitures in the museum have been left untouched, so that you can see a real Baba Nyonya residence from the 19th century.
The museum features outer swing doors are made of teakwood that is elaborately and intricately carved. The tiles were hand painted and internal doors have been made sturdier and firm for safety. The entrance of the museum welcomes you with good luck messages on one side, and the other side of the door have the household name crafted.
The upper level of Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum showcases the Chinese tiles used by the Baba Nyonya.
The elaborate designs inside the Baba Nyonya museum shows the attention to finer details. You can see a collection of black wooded furniture of Dutch and Chinese finishings, gold leaf fixtures, Victorian chandeliers and incredible lacquer screens which has been carved quiet skilfully. You can also have a look at the costumes which were worn by the Peranakan family.
