Art of Old Town Ipoh – A walk along Ipoh’s heritage trail


The Art of Old Town Ipoh is the celebration of the Ipoh’s history and heritage shared with the Old Town as well as the OldTown White Coffee. It is not some random wall murals, but one that signifies an important milestone. The 7 murals are a collaboration between OldTown White Coffee and Ipoh, and it was created by the talented renowned Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic who was the man behind the interesting murals in Georgetown.


The Old Town

Old Town is a place that is located in the west of the ‘Kinta River’, and it is famous for its dynamic commercial district. The commercial district has a street that is known as ‘Leech Street’ which is surrounded by many historical and old ‘shop houses’.

There are small lanes in the Old town, which you can take a walk along these heritage trails, and find these murals artwork. It is amazing how much you can learn about Ipoh’s heritage, history and culture just simply from these artworks! Here are some of the murals you can find along the street:


  • Old Man & Coffee: This first mural can be found just outside the Ipoh OldTown White Coffee café. It shows a portrait of an ‘Old man’ enjoying his coffee. It tells us that the people of Ipoh love to start their day with a good breakfast along with a cup of OldTown White Coffee, it is their daily routine.
  • Paper Plane: The next mural is a portrait of ‘two children’ who are enjoying their childhood, free from any worries. They are seated on an paper plane, flying high up in the sky.
  • Tin Mining Industry: Ipoh depended heavily on the tin mining industry for about 100 years. This painting shows how Ipoh has evolved from the tin mining town they once used to be. If you are interested in learning more about Ipoh’s tin mining history, you can visit the Han Chin Pet Soo museum. It is Malaysia’s first Hakka tin mining museum and it is situated just around the corner.
